9:45 am – 1:45 pm         368th Commencement: Morning Exercises and the Alumni Luncheon

Tercentenary Theatre

The Morning Exercises consist of orations, anthems and the conferring of degrees on all graduates.  Seating for the Morning Exercises is limites.  Tickets are required for entry to Harvard Yard and are limited to one ticket per alumnus or alumna. 

 

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm        Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association: The Afternoon Program

Tercentenary Theatre

The Commencement Afternoon Program is the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association.  The 2019 program includes welcoming remarks and acknowledgements by Margaret M. Want AB '09, president of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA), Harvard University President Lawrence S. Bacow JD '76, MPP '76, PhD '78, and German Chancellor Angela D. Merkel, Commencement speaker; and introduction of the chief marshal; announcement of Overseer and HAA director election results; and presentation of the Harvard Medals.

Malkin Athletic Center, 39 Holyoke Street or Hemenway Gym, 1515 Massachusetts Avenue

Group childcare for children three and older.  Children 8 and under will go to the Mac and children 9+ will go to Hemenway.  Pre-registration is required.  Walk-ins will not be accepted. Although snacks will be provided, parents are advised to feed their children prior to drop-off.

                                      with William Pirl and Jamie Jacobs

Join Dr. William PIrl MD '94, MPH '08, RF '14, associate professor of Psychiatry, and Dr. Jamie Jacobs, assistant professor of Psychology, for a look inside their new undergraduate course, which brings the teaching and research of Harvard Medical School to Harvard Yard.  Experience how students learn to examine scientific data and evidence - or lack of evidence - linking psychological practices with cancer survival, as well as develop and bring critical thinking skills to evaluating medical beliefs.

                                  of Half Truths

We live in an age of misinformation - constantly bombarded by stories slanted one way or another.  What happens when we have to constantly sort fact from fiction?  What happens when self-described fake news outlets like The Onion and The Daily Show turn out to be uncomfortably close to the truth?  How do we engage in conversations about immigration, make medical decisions, understand scientific research, and think aobut difference (racial, ethnic, gender or otherwise) when fiction prevails?  Join Molly Hennessy-Fiske, and LA Times reporter covering the US-Mexico border; Baratunde Thurston, cultural critic, comedian, writer and veteran of The Onion and The Daily Show; Joelle Simpson, medical director for emergency preparedness at Children's National Health System; and Betsy Herbin-Triant, an assistant professor of history at UMass Lowell who has researched propaganda in the Jim Crow era; in a converstaion moderated by Jia-Rui Cook, supervisor of news and events and projects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

                                  Can Do More Than Hope

Are you concerned about climate change but feel too overwhelmed or busy to take action? This interactive discussion will have you looking beyond "doom and gloom" while empowering you with concrete actions to take on both individual and collective levels.  Hear from classmates who have made a difference at home, work and beyond.  This event is created and facilitated by Dahni-El Giles, Jason Jay, Emily Sadigh. Mateo Jaramillo and Brandon Hofmeister. 
 

11:15 am  – 12:15 pm    Class Symposium: Evolving Challenges for Women Leaders

How has the landscape changed for women in leadership roles in the past 20 years?  What about for women in the workplace generally?  Join Tara Abrahams, girls' and women's advocate and Board Chair of She's the First; Bridget Frey, Chief Technology Officer of Redfin and Independent Board Director at Premera Blue Cross; Malka Older, aid worker, sociologist, and author of the science fiction political thriller Infomocracy and its sequels in a converstaion moderated by Rebecca Hughes Parker, attorney and Global Editor-in-Chief of the Cybersecurity Law Report and the Anti-Corruption Report, about our most significant leadership challenges, strategies for overcoming unconscious bias and how can we drive change in the future - for ourselves and the next generation.
